EAWAG is managing the project which will focus on powdered activated carbon dosing prior to the tertiary continuous sand filters. In collaboration Techfina from Switzerland and Nordic Water GmbH Sand-Cycle will be implemented to monitor the sand filter performance during the trials. This is the first Swiss Sand-Cycle reference. Switzerland is ahead of the European market for micropollutant removal from municipal waste water, governed by national legislation. Tertiary DynaSand filters, which have often been applied for nutrient removal may now contribute to achieving this new objective. Proper monitoring and control of these filters is therefore becoming even more important. Sand-Cycle is a powerful tool to optimize the plant performance, and supporting the operators to run the filters smoothly. The trials will be executed in a timeframe of 6 months, the results will become available at the end of 2021.”}]},{“component”:”hc_column”,”id”:”column_3aWXZ”,”column_width”:”col-md-5″,”animation”:””,”animation_time”:””,”timeline_animation”:””,”timeline_delay”:””,”timeline_order”:””,”css_classes”:””,”custom_css_classes”:””,”custom_css_styles”:””,”main_content”:[{“component”:”hc_image”,”id”:”EvfE8″,”css_classes”:””,”custom_css_classes”:””,”custom_css_styles”:””,”image”:”https://sand-cycle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Techfina-Barbengo–1024×814.jpeg|1131|1423|1387″,”alt”:””,”thumb_size”:”large”}]}],”section_settings”:””},”scripts”:{},”css”:{},”css_page”:””,”template_setting”:{“settings”:{“id”:”settings”}},”template_setting_top”:{},”page_setting”:{“settings”:[“lock-mode-off”]},”post_type_setting”:{“settings”:{“image”:”https://sand-cycle.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Techfina-Barbengo–1024×814.jpeg|1131|1423|1387″,”excerpt”:”Full scale trials at WwTP Barbengo in Switzerland are executed to remove micropollutants in the waste water effluent, which is discharged into Lake of Lugano.
Our Sand-Cycle remote RFID monitoring portal has now been extended with an API access. This allows our customers to integrate the Sand-Cycle output into any local control system. Optimizing sand filter performance has now become even more easy, by regularly feeding the Sand-Cycle parameters into the local control (scada) system. Sand-Cycle is used as a powerful real-time tool in continuous sand filters to watch the filter performance and to optimize the process.

Application Programming Interface to facilitate communication
With the API we are starting direct communication between our Sand-Cycle application and the customer’s control interface. The customer may do a web-request for third party programs, the result is in the widely used JSON format. The data transfer is highly secured by a unique access key, IP whitelisting and encrypted SSL traffic.

All Sand-Cycle process parameters real-time available
All Sand-Cycle parameters which are presented real-time via our dashboards are now also updated every ten minutes and made available through the API access port. For each sand filter the following real-time information is released: last activity, sand movement homogeneity, sand circulation, active bed volume, total and unique tags.

Sand-Cycle has been developed as a powerful tool to improve performance of any type of continuous sand filters, to reduce operational costs ánd to make life easier in the day-to-day operations. Sand-Cycle uses RFID tags, which are added to the sand filter bed, acting as a proxy for the sand movement in the filter.
All field data is processed and calculated into useful parameters that power the Sand-Cycle dashboard. In this way, an operator receives real time insight in all relevant operational parameters.

The working principle of Sand-Cycle is explained in this video by Hans Wouters.

Sand-cycle receives positive feedback of researchers that have used Sand-Cycle in their pilot testing with continuous sand filtration at WwTW Gardermoen in Norway. They are enthusiastic about the use of this tool and reported their positive feedback.

International Water Association (IWA) publication

The research, executed on behalf of the Regional Research Council of the city of Oslo, focused upon nitrogen en phosphorus removal in a continuous sand filter after MBBR treatment. Very low effluent levels were consistently established; results have been published by IWA in the 80th Volume, Issue 2, of Water Science & Technology (see this link: https://doi.org/10.2166/wst.2019.266 to read the full article).\

Robust and easy to use tool

The research team indicated Sand-Cycle to be a very convenient tool for monitoring good operating filter conditions. The results are reliable and, in addition, Sand-Cycle contributed to the quality and intensity of the research. Quick interventions were possible, once Sand-Cycle detected process anomalies, reducing valuable research off-time.

These positive experiences with Sand-Cycle confirm what other users already have experienced. Sand-Cycle frequently receives positive feedback from other international references.

Sand-Cycle dashboard

The Sand-Cycle dashboard below clearly illustrates the recorded distinction between a good and bad performing filter. The scatter between the average and the standard deviation values indicates the homogenity level of the system. Greater spread (thicker band) implies that few parts of the filters flow significantly faster or slower. This case of thick band also depicts relatively lower performance level of the filter.

The figure above is a Sand-Cycle dashboard of the pilot at RWZI Gardermoen on March 1st 2018. The graph shows the average sand circulation speed (blue line) during 48 hours. In addition, it shows the related standard deviation (upper and lower gray lines). In this way, this graph gives real-time insight whether the filter is running good or bad.
